In Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Advanced, I like to use the options
for disconnecting if idle for more than [15] mins, and disconnect when no
longer needed. I check these boxes, and all is well for a few days, and I get
the warning popup whenever it is thinking of disconnecting me. Then, for no
reason at all, this ceases to work and I have to go in and re-check the
boxes. It works again for another few days, until...you guessed it.
Is this just something to live with, or is there any action I (or my wife!)
am taking that might cause these settings to be lost on such a regular basis?

The UI for this feature is very bad. Characters that you are typing
while editing can be misinterpreted as commands to the timeout dialog
even though you haven't seen it yet. Hence if you happen to be typing
the right character to cancel the feature just when it is scheduled to be
displayed you may find that that character was not received in the window
where you meant it to go and the feature is stopped without you even
being aware of it.

It is something that I have been living with since it was first created
for IE4. My disonnect timeout is 9 minutes; so I see this problem
fairly frequently. OTOH I think 9 minutes makes me more aware
of when it has stopped working.

I suppose what you could do is create a .reg file (or .cmd file)
to stick in your Startup directory which would at least zap the options
back on each time explorer.exe starts. So far I haven't bothered.

Thanks Robert. Good explanation. Think I'll just have to live with it. It's
irritating but not the end of the world and I guess MS have taken the same
view as all of us -they're not bothered.
