dialup connection disconnects

My PC; PIII 800Mhz, Windows 2000 SP4, Internet Explorer 6,
dialup 56K, Norton Antivirus with recent updates. My
dialup connection disconnects after viewing few pages, but
if I start downloading different files, the connection
remains open no matter how long the downloads take. Could
I get help?!
