If you don't have Norton System Works, there are a number of programs which
automatically check for updates if you let them. Try installing the freeware
program StartUpRun (it picks up more programs than System Information's
Software Environment) and see if eg RealPlayer's Update, yahoo messenger is
loading then. Most of the programs have something hidden in their
options/preferences which allows you disable them at startup. With those
that don't StartupRun lets you prevent them loading with your machine.
