When playing some avi-files (movies) using Windows Media Player and
RealPlayer, heard only the music and noise, but dialogue is not heard. But
the same files played normally using VLC media player on the same computer.
The same files played normally using Windows Media Player on another
computer.

On both computers is WinXP, which is updated automatically.
In what may be the reason? Not enough codec? And how do you know which
codecs are needed?

Thank you
Lev

It is best to test the video file with GSpot first, to get
some hint as to what audio CODEC is required. Don't just download
every CODEC pack you can find, as that isn't the most efficient
way to solve the problem.

Take GSpot over to the computer where the files play normally,
and again test the video file. How does the response in the
GSpot window differ ? Is the successful CODEC listed ? Perhaps
seeing the info presented on the working computer, will remind
you of some software you installed to make it work.

Thank you Paul! But the program GSpot gives the same information exactly on
all codecs (audio and video) on both machines.

Thank you, I downloaded and installed the DivX codec and player. And now I
got in my computer another player which correctly reproduces these
avi-files. But my Windows Media Player and RealPlayer are still not
reproduce the dialogues. How to get these players to work correctly?

You made the distinction of "music and noise" versus "not hearing dialogue".
Would the AVI be multi-channel (more than stereo sound) ? Would
there be more than one audio stream stored inside it (French dialog
and English dialog etc) ? You need to inspect the structure of the
file a bit more.
