I wonder if you can help me.

A friend of mine is looking for a free program that will block nasty
diallers from being installed and/or used on her system. These diallers
connect you to the internet so you assume you are connected via your normal
number, its only when you receive your telephone bill that you realise you
were using a different telephone number and have been charged an exorbitant
amount for the connection; possibly as high as £1 per minute.

Obviously there are certain measures she could take to help prevent things
like this from happening but she is worried about what her son & his friends
might do when they are on the internet as safety measures will be the last
thing on their mind.

Can anyone tell me where I can find a good free program that will block
these sorts of diallers?

I hope you can help and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I appreciate any help or information given.

Thanks!

up to £1.50 per min I think.

BT offer a free dialler warner program, it should warn you when a program
connects out using a new number so you can hang up (no doubt some
diallers will try to disable or otherwise get around it).

http://www.btmodemprotection.com/

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ detects some diallers as does
Spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html.

I believe Kaspersky anti-virus targets dialers too - Antidote uses Kaspersky's
engine and is available free (scan on demand, no disinfect only)

Broadband can now be had from as little as £10 per month, cheaper than
many dial-up services - unplug the modem and no more worries about
premium rate.

Regards,

Mel.

Spyware, adware, browser hijackers, and dialers are some of the
fastest-growing threats on the Internet today. By simply browsing to a
web page, you could find your computer to be the brand-new host of one
of these unwanted fiends!

The most important step you can take is to secure your system. And
SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.

- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser
hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and
Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet
Explorer.

SpywareBlaster can help keep your system spyware-free and secure,
without interfering with the "good side" of the web.

And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain
running in the background.

SpywareBlaster is freeware for personal and educational use.
