I have an intermittent dial up problem. When connecting often my
connection receives 150 bytes and stops. the modem tries to send but
nothing happens

i had a similar problem in 98 and the fix was
1) deleted modem
2) deleted dun
3) deleted winsock2
4) deleted the bin files (but not all) in the inf directory to make
win 98 rebuild its driver base
5) reboot
6) reinstall modem
7) reinstall dun

will this work in XP? has anyone encountered this problem?

I have seen this. It is a hardware issue where the modem tries to connect at
too high a speed for the poor line conditions. These cheap 56K modems are
the worst. Often you have to try many times to get good connection. The best
is to look for an old 28K modem from when they used to make quality
equipment. Some modems can be made to connect at a lower speed by appending
an AT command string. Look in the modem connection log for clues to further
diagnose this problem. One more idea, is the modem close to the video card?
I have seen RFI problems where a modem picks up noise from the video card.
Keep modem at opposite end of PCI slots.
