Connection to <Number> Is Not a Valid Name" Error Message
Occurs If You Create a Dial-Up Networking Connection.
This is the error regardless of the name or number used.
I tried the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 319162
which has you reinstall the OS. That didn't fix the
problem.

Any ideas?

Sometimes you have to perform the in-place upgrade twice. I would also try
re-installing the modem after checking with the vendor for latest drivers
and patches.
First, you might want to try:

1. Confirm the necessary services have the correct status and startup type:

- To access services, click start, go to settings, choose control panel
- Go into Administrative Tools and choose Services
- To access the properties for a service, double-click the service

The following services need to be present, started, and with the correct
startup
type:

Plug and Play Started Automatic
Remote Procedure Call Started Automatic
Telephony Started Manual
Remote Access Connection Manager Started Manual

In addition, you want to make sure that the Logon As for each of these
services is
"LocalSystem."

2. Check the RasMan key in the registry

Do not use a registry editor to modify the Windows registry unless you have
no
alternative. Registry editors bypass standard safeguards provided by
administrative tools which prevent loss of performance or damage to your
operating
system. Editing the registry directly can have serious, unexpected
consequences
that may prevent the system from starting and may require a reinstallation
of the
operating system.

- Click Start, go to Run, and choose "Regedit"
- Browse to the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan
- Select RasMan, click on the "Registry" pulldown menu, and choose "Export
Registry File."
- Save this key somewhere easily accessible, and call it "rasman."
(The .reg extension is added automatically).
- Once the key has been saved, expand RasMan.
- Browse to PPP\EAP.
- The only subkeys here should be 13 and 4. Delete the 25 and 26 subkeys.

3. Reboot the system and test. This should work. If it doesn't, you will
need to
complete an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000.

your other option is a parallel installation.
