I'm looking for a file which logs when a modem has been used and the number
dialled. Is there such a file? I've looked for one but can't find it.

Thanks.

The System Log in Event Viewer will show what ISP might have
been connected to the computer when using DUN. Also, like in
the good old days, a communications program might generate a
log. IIRC, Procomm did just that. But have not seen anything
like it in Windows XP.
