Hello and good afternoon,

I am trying to get my neighbors computer in working order. It's a Dell 507GR
with Windows XP, less than a year old, and compared to my measely computer,
it's a powerhouse! The problem with their computer is it has become
overwhelmed with trojans, spyware, and possibly viruses. I got rid of as many
of the parasites as I could, with outdated tools, the thing is: I've been
trying to install AOL dial up or Juno Free dial up, couldn't connect online
at their house, so I bought the tower to my house, hooked my monitor and
keyboard, mouse to it. Tried to get it to go online so I could update
EVERYTHING!! (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, etc....)
The internet software is loaded in the computer, but could not get connected
through their phone line (for dial up only) or my phone line (DSL). I thought
I could get it online here, but no go. So when the neighbors get it back, I
would like to try again to get it going online. There is always a problem,
like "cannot detect dial tone, cannot connect to the network", I've checked
and rechecked everything, the modem's fine, the phone line is fine. What
could be happening? Is it possible that some virus is keeping it from
connecting online? This computer is almost toast if it doesn't get some
serious updating. Aside from doing a complete restore, is there anything I
can do to help this computer?
Thanks in advance.

p.s. I wouldn't encourage anyone to go with AOL, I despise it myself. Death
before AOL!

Grab the tools with your PC, burn them to disk, and then copy them over to
the other PC and run them with their definitions.

Malware Cleaners and Repair:

Other than that the symptoms you're describing make me think it might be
Winsock and the directions for checking/fixing that are on the page.

You should also note that the DSL modem does not do dialing. You need to make
sure that the PC really has an analog (standard) modem.

As of AOL, stay clear. This will render the PC even worst off. BTW: If
neighbor has DSL service, they may also have a backup dial-up services included.

Yves- my house has dsl, the neighbors had dsl, but then switched back to
dial up. I tried to connect with my phone line with and without dsl, the
software checked for the best way to connect and didn't detect any way to
connect even though neighbors computer has a V92 analog modem. I also tried
to connect using a Juno disk, it looked like it worked but then would hang up
and redial, hang up and redial, etc... I'm going to try to connect again
later, at the neighbors house. Believe me when I say I am anti-AOL... it's
the neighbor's dial up of choice, I guess because of the free trial.
Thanks for your advice
