I just recently setup a network connection from a remote
site to out workplace on Windows 2000. I am dialing up
using a XP machine with a V92 modem and for some reason it
is only using a speed of about 2.4kpbs. I tried with
another machine and sure enough it is using 2.4kpbs. Is
this a setting that can be changed in control panel or
something. I don't understand if I have a 56k modem why it
only gets 2.4kpbs. Thanks

Marcos

Hi Marcos,

The default settings in 2000/XP allow for the maximum throughput for the modme you are
using. The speed you are seeing is not controlled by the OS. It is either your service provider
(which is common) or some settings on the modem that is causing this. Check with your
modem vendor for settings on the modems and what modem drivers you need ot use for
which operating system. You might also want to check with your ISP to see if they have set a
through put limit.

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Marcos,

Check with your ISP and the vendor for the modem. Nothing to check on the windows side of
things.

Thanks,
Gary

Hi Marcos,

Yes, especially when goiing from modem to modem:

When going from analog modem to isp, connection goes from analog to digital
with only one conversion so connection is at full speed of modem assuming no
line problems.

When going from analog modem to analog modem, connection goes from analog to
digital and then back to analog. Thus maximum connection speed with two
conversions is half of the slow modem speed.

Try downloading the latest INF files from the USR site for your modems. That should help with
the connection speed.

Thanks,
Gary
