I need help with some failures I'm experiencing implementing RIS on our
network. We currently have a Windows NT domain and a Windows 2000 Active
Directory domain (mixed mode). All the computer accounts reside in AD and
all the user accounts reside in the NT domain. DHCP, WINS, and DNS are
running on Win2k member servers in the NT domain. We are planning to migrate
everything, but not for another 6 months.
I have been trying to implement RIS on a Windows 2000 member server. I
install RIS by running the setup, create a CD-based Win2k image, and then
authorize it in the Active Directory domain by using the DHCP snapin. I also
enable the "Respond to client computers requesting service" option. In
addition, I've installed a desktop with Win2k Pro and then ran the RIPREP.EXE
utility to create an image from the desktop.
The problem I have occurs when I boot up a desktop from the PXE enabled NIC,
and it attempts to obtain an IP address. The result is our production DHCP
servers are taken down by becoming "Unauthorized", and then we have to reboot
the DHCP servers before anyone can obtain IP addresses again.
I have noticed the following error appearing in the event log on the DHCP
servers each time:
"The DHCP/BINL service running on this machine has detected the following
servers on the network. Their domains are listed below as well as the
authorization status of the local machine as verified against the directory
service enterprises of each of these domains. If the servers do not belong
to any domain, the domain is listed as empty. The IP address of each of
these servers is listed in parentheses. The DHCP/BINL service has not
determined if it is authorized in directory domain "5500" (Server IP Address
192.233.3.4)"
We even tried reserving a block of IP addresses, installing DHCP on the
Win2k RIS server, joining it to the AD domain, and then authorizing it. But
the same result occurs: Both production DHCP servers become unauthorized and
DHCP goes down.
Any ideas? Thanks.
