It appears that XP does not have a driver for the Yamaha, but that I could
find it elsewhere.

problem is if the system does not 'see' the drive, how am I to install the
driver?

If I go into Add new Hardware the computer tells me that it can't see any
new hardware.

Where should I start? Download the driver? And then what, if the CD drive
is nnwhere to be seen, not even in Device manager?

DL gave you good advice including a link . Download the .exe file to your
desktop , run the .exe file and then reboot. You may be lucky but dont count
on it.

Yes, I know and I followed it. But the .exe file leads to unzipping and
then I can't see any .exe file that will install a driver.

So, I'm still stuck.

I rtebooted but all stays the same. First, I can't reboot at all: the usual
opening information about the Motherboard do not come up. Just a black
screen; then after several tries it starts and goes into the Bios with
warning about the CPU speed, which loooks fine. I save and go on and
usually it then starts normally, but still not the missing CD ROM/Scsi drive
