Device Timeout

Just recently, I my computer started freezing at seemingly
random intervals. When it froze, there would be an error
message on the screen saying a few things which i can't
remember now, but the most important thing I believe
was "Delayed write failed". When my computer would
reboot, chkdsk would find a couple lost file fragments and
when windows loaded, I would start receiving error
messages which would have a program's name followed by a
window's name (or vis versa?) and then would say Device
Timeout. The text of the error would say that an I/O
operation on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 had failed and give me
the options cancel, try again, and continue, none of which
would have an effect so I would ctrl-alt-del out of the
process that was labeled in the title bar. Couple
questions. Why am I getting this error message? Hardware
or Software error? How do I fix it? Any answers are
greatly appreciated.
