Device problems on 2000

My computer is getting an error in the event veiwer that i
need help on.

The device, \device\ide\ideport1 , did not respond within
the timeout period.

Usually when i get this error my computer will crash and i
have to reboot.

I think that it is having a problem with my tape drive for
it is on the secondary port.

Any ideas?
