I think you may mean your capture software dosen't detect a cam?
You don't get that error message just by connecting cam via analog s-video?

Only DV camcorders connected via a firewire cable from the cams firewire
output - to - PC's firewire port will be auto detected.

Via S-Video:
1) You have to be sure that the PC S-Video socket you are connecting to
is actually an INPUT, I suspect it is your graphics card OUTPUT for
connecting to TV for viewing PC content on TV. If so, you cannot
capture
via that s-video socket.

2) Is the S-Video socket on rear of PC and on same plate that your
monitor is connected to? If so, then it is an OUTPUT only.

3) If you are 100% certain that your PC is indeed equipped with analog
capture INPUT's, your PC would've have had installed specific capture
software.

4) Is your cam a DV type model?

I have a Canon ZR30 that connects to my PC's firewire but WMM also tells me
it does not detect a capture device. What do you think is the problem?
