Device manager shows yellowed RAS Async Adapter

In XP SP2, all updated, with a Marvell Yukon network PCI card in an Intel
chipset MB, the Device Manage shows under Network, a RAS Async Adapter with
a yellow exclamation point. I have tried updating the driver--no help. It
cannot be uninstalled--says it may be necessary for boot-up. The drivers are
listed as asyncmac.sys (up to date) and
sharedaccess.ini in Documents and Settings, All Users, App Data, Microsoft,
Network. If I delete that file, which has a July, 2001 date, it is recreated
when I update the RAS Async Adapter drivers. But the yellow ! stays even
after reboot.

The computer and network seem to be working well otherwise. All services are
started.

Does anyone know what this adapter is, or what it does?

Thanks.

Ken

A black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field indicates the device is in
a problem state. Note that a device that is in a problem state can be
functioning.

asyncmac.sys = MS Remote Access serial network driver

I've gone through everything in the kb article, but can't seem to get rid of
the exclamation point. Also, I have no idea what an MS Remote Access serial
network driver does in my system, or why the device is there. When I disable
it--I can't uninstall it--everything still seems to work. The Remote Access
services are all started.

Is it USB related? Regular serial ports?

Open the Device Manager, double click the RAS Async Adapter, on the General
tab see if there is Do not use this device (Disable). If there is Disable
it.

Or to disable a device in Device Manager, right-click the device and then
click Disable.

My RAS Async Adapter is not connected (no dial-up anything on my machine
now) and there is no option to disable mine. I have to click on View | Show
hidden devices to even see it listed in Device Manager.

RAS Async Adapter has something to do with dial-up adapters. RAS is short
for Remote Access Service. It may also be needed for other things when on
a network, I have no idea, I am not on a network.

Maybe it is needed for the Routing and Remote Access service. Is that
service running?

Routing and Remote Access service....
[[Offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area network
environments.]]

I would disable it, but see..

remote access
[[Part of the integrated Routing and Remote Access service that provides
remote networking for telecommuters, mobile workers, and system
administrators who monitor and manage servers at multiple branch offices.
Users with a computer running Windows and Network Connections can dial in to
remotely access their networks for services such as file and printer
sharing, electronic mail, scheduling, and SQL database access.]]

remote access server
[[A Windows-based computer running the Routing and Remote Access service and
configured to provide remote access.]]

I have disabled the Routing and Remote Access service--your link explains
why that should be done for security purposes--but it doesn't seem to affect
the yellowed (!) mark beside the RAS asynch icon. In fact, that cannot be
deleted even in safe mode.

Take this for what it's worth. Ignore it.

OK--thanks. I was away for a few days and it doesn't seemed to have hurt
anything, so I will ignore it as you suggest.
