I often switch on my SCSI scanner after XP has been booted for a while. To
get it going I need to click - Start - Control Panel - System - Hardware -
[computer name] - scan for hardware changes.

The best shortcut I know of is to press Windows-Break to go straight to
System but I want to have a shortcut and/or a batch file that "connect" the
scanner.

Any clues?

Only thing I can think of is a shortcut on your desktop to
C:\Windows\System32\devmgmt.msc

Navigate to that file, and send to Desktop as shortcut. You can also
type devmgmt.msc in the Run Command as well.
