Device manager does not display

Hi,

When I open Device Manager, no items are displayed. I have tried steps in
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;311504 , which
identified the plug and play service as a possible cause, but no luck.
I don't know if this is linked, but also when I browse 'my computer', the
drives take several seconds to show up.

My system is a Dell latitude D600 notebook running XP with Sp2. I use the
system with a docking device when in the office.

Any help much appreciated
