The device 'IDE-CD R/RW 4x4x24' disappeared from the system

I have a Compaq and have noticed my D drive is gone and is now my compaq
CD-drive...also, the E drive disappeared. I have searched the Error log and
found the "PlugPlayMa nager" had this message:

The device 'IDE-CD R/RW 4x4x24' (IDE\CdRomIDE-CD_R/RW_4x4x24__
____________________C12a____\3 237323830344833495736543156202 0_0_0_0_0)
disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal.

what has happened and how can i get my drives back?
