Device Driver challenges

Yesterday I had occasion to open up the case of the PC to
install a new cable. To do this I had to remove
temporarily) the wireless LAN card and the modem card.
Having put them back, I now find the modem listed in
Device Manager as "Data/Fax modem #2" and set to COM17
(used to be COM2), but the machine says COM2 is in use.

Same with the wlan - it's "Wireless PC Adapter #3" and
won't let me use the originally assigned TCP/IP address -
I have to go one higher. It seems that the original
device driver may still be in the machine. What's going
on, and how can I revert please?

Running Windows XP Pro on a genuine Intel Pentium with
512MB memory.
