At completely random times, Windows XP is telling me that a device is
being disconnected, then reconnected. It can happen 5 times in an hour,
or 5 times in 5 hours - it really is that random.

NOTHING in Windows logs exactly what is going on (Event viewer). I've
completely removed ALL USB devices which has ruled them out - I've
disabled the 'power management' feature of USB Root Hubs in Device
Manager, and I'm now out of ideas.

I've trawled through several newsgroups looking for an answer to this.

Then only feasible answer I found was the 'power management' issue.

Is my hardware faulty or is Windows just being crap?

Any suggestions, please do throw them this way - this is driving me insane!

The next time you get the message go straight to the event viewer. Double click on
the Event Type in System and or Application to see what is connecting/disconnecting.

Thanks for your response.

There is no 'message' - only a distinct LAG and the sound for
disconnect, reconnect. Event Viewer logs nothing relating to it.

Doesn't make sense.

Gonna re-install XP if it carries on, really p*ssing me off, I can't
record audio, video, or play back without LAGGING due to this problem.

Get/run Process Explorer to try and pin it down. Free and doesn't install.

I have the EXACT same problem, and I have a clean install. I just updated.

this week (or last week) windows kept nagging about updates. (REALLY NAGGING, STUPID MICROSOFT popped away any program I was working with to pop up a stupid screen with "you really really have to restart")

so eventually, since I can`t work my programs otherwise, I restarted the damn thing.
and now I have your exact same problem.
it`s definately from one of the last Miscrosoft updates, don`t ask me which one.

another thing I`ve heard (but this seems to be a Vista problem, is windows defender disabling usb devices).
yes, I`ve disabled this, and guess what? -.- sorry, but even thát didn`t work.

anyway, there`s also good news ^^ more ppl have your problem, so more people are working on it.
