I receive the following message when Windows XP start's
up:

Device detector encountered a problem. Details are:

AppName: devdetect.exe AppVer: 2.0.0.12
ModName: mfc70.dll
ModVer: 7.0.9466.0 Offset: 0000f442

Any assistance would be greatly requested

Reinstall ACDSee Device Detector (probably came with your digital camera).
