I have inserted a distribution list to an email by selecting Insert Item from
the tool. Then I sent email to myself, opened it, renamed the distribution
list and tried to save it. It saves to the "My Documents" folder. I have
tried saving it in every file type available

Insert it as an Outlook Item (not a file type) and make sure your message
format it RTF.
