Determining Internet Connection Speed

I use a DSL Connection as my Internet Connection. I connect to the DSL modem
using a network cable. Because of this, when I hover the cursor over the
network icon in my system tray it displays the connection speed between my
network card and DSL modem rather than my connection speed to the internet.
Is there any Windows XP utility I can use to determine the speed of my
internet connection? (I use Windows XP Professional SP2) Thanks.

There's nothing built into XP. These web sites have speed tests that
measure actual transfer rates between your computer and the Internet:

http://www.dslreports.com/stest
http://www.toast.net/performance
http://reviews.cnet.com/Bandwidth_me...-0.html?tag=ft

The speed that shows when you hover the cursor is the maximum rated
speed of the connection. Actual data transfer is always slower than
that.

Nathan,

My favorite for checking bandwidth speed and a host of other things is
PCPitstop.com.

I have a group (8-9) on-line Bandwidth testing sites I use. Of them all,
the following usually give a quick/exact measurement.
