Hi Kirby,
Have you tried this method? Plug in your Sidewinder for this example, click Start / Control Panel / Switch to Classic view if you haven't already / click Game Controllers Click Add... / Select Microsoft Sidewinder Auto Detect / OK / OK. I hope that works for you, otherwise there's a serious issue involved. -- Cheers, Windows XP MVP Shell / User Jimmy S. http://mvp.support.microsoft.com Game FAQs: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;[LN];gms Visit my Zone.com / Gaming Helpsite: http://nibblesnbits.tk or Call / Contact MS Support at: http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=sz;en-us;top My advice is donated "AS IS" without warranty; nor do I confer any rights. _________________________________________________________ "Kirby" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:088a01c3beda$c44cc7a0$(E-Mail Removed)... | I have tried 4 different usb controllers (2 Saitek, 2 | Logitech) and I am unable to use any. | | I plug the usb controller in and XP makes multiple sounds | (rather than the normal 2 beeps). The "Add..." button is only for gameport devices because they cannot tell
the system they have arrived like USB devices can. Check in your c:\Windows\inf directory (assuming typical installation) for lwusbhid.inf or input.inf. Lwusbhid.inf should get placed on your system if it is missing by installing Logitechs Wingman software. If those files are present it would probably be easier to do an "in place upgrade". This will reinstall your system without messing up your other installed programs. You will have to reapply Service Packs, some drivers, and security updates afterwards though. Thanks for yor help guys...the 'add' option does not work
as it does not register any devices. I have found the lwusbid.inf file and a input.pnf (note: .pnf and not .inf is that ok?). So my next step according to your email is an 'in place upgrade'. I am not familiar with this. Is this similar to a system restore? Hi Kirby,
The "inplace upgrade" or "repair installation" can be done this way: Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows: using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall, plug back into your Internet connection and install all Critical and Recommended updates from: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com This will rebuild all your Windows system files, but leave your data and programs intact. Hope it works out easily for you Kirby! :-) -- Cheers, Windows XP MVP Shell / User Jimmy S. http://mvp.support.microsoft.com Game FAQs: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;[LN];gms Visit my Zone.com / Gaming Helpsite: http://nibblesnbits.tk or Call / Contact MS Support at: http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=sz;en-us;top My advice is donated "AS IS" without warranty; nor do I confer any rights. _________________________________________________________ "Kirby" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:1139401c3bf53$e18311c0$(E-Mail Removed)... | Thanks for yor help guys...the 'add' option does not work | as it does not register any devices. | | I have found the lwusbid.inf file and a input.pnf | (note: .pnf and not .inf is that ok?). | | So my next step according to your email is an 'in place | upgrade'. Thanks again, however, here's another twist...
My computer (HP 750n) came with the XP OS on a partitioned portion of my hard drive (i.e. I don't have the original XP OS disk). Now what? Not sure how I can access this partition. I appreciate your patience with my follow up questions. Hi Kirby,
HP has to provide you with either a XP CD or a Restore CD. You might be able to workaround that problem for now by searching your hard drive for the files that Joshua Smith told you about. Don't use the extensions for the search since we want to find the compressed versions of the files. If you find those files, use MSCONFIG to expand the compressed file into the directory where Joshua said those files should exist. If you're prompted to overwrite an existing file, do so. Good luck Kirby, and get yourself a proper XP CD to avoid these types of problems in the futur. It's worth it. :-) -- Cheers, Windows XP MVP Shell / User Jimmy S. http://mvp.support.microsoft.com Game FAQs: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;[LN];gms Visit my Zone.com / Gaming Helpsite: http://nibblesnbits.tk or Call / Contact MS Support at: http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=sz;en-us;top My advice is donated "AS IS" without warranty; nor do I confer any rights. _________________________________________________________ "Kirby" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:06f601c3bfae$6929aee0$(E-Mail Removed)... | Thanks again, however, here's another twist... | | My computer (HP 750n) came with the XP OS on a | partitioned portion of my hard drive (i.e. I don't have | the original XP OS disk). | | Now what? I have the same problem you discribe. It all started with
my installing the Saitek drivers for XP for the Cyborg Gold. Since then I can not get any game controlers to install and it whacked my USB mouse and keyboard. The the saitek driver install started the problem before that everything worked fine. The driver that Saitek is using is not MS approved. I have included info on the driver below in case any one is interested. File Name: SD_WinNT_3_2_0_18master.exe Size: 12.3 MB Date: Monday, September 22, 2003, 6:04:31 PM As much as I love to bash MS I think Saitek is pushing crap >-----Original Message----- >Let me know too if you have problems and do not have a regular install disk >of WinXP. > >Joshua Smith >DirectInput Test Lab >Microsoft >----- >Get Secure! www.microsoft.com/security >This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights > >"Jimmy S." <Private> wrote in message >news:(E-Mail Removed)... >> Hi Kirby, >> >> HP has to provide you with either a XP CD or a Restore CD. >> You might be able to workaround that problem for now by >> searching your hard drive for the files that Joshua Smith told >> you about.
