win xp -- ie 6 sp2

I got my laptop to recognize (or at least pick up) the signal from my
router.
But I cannot go to any web sites.
I keep getting error, Cannot connect to web site.
I noticed that the progress (on bottom of screen) is saying "detecting
proxy" for a while,
then the, Cannot connect to web site.
Any help?

Hi there,

Since the laptop is connected to the router, make sure the proxy is
completely disabled for IE, follow the below steps:

1. Click Start, run, type "inetcpl.cpl" (with out quotation marks) and click
OK.
2. In the resulting window, click On the Connections tab and click the LAN
settings button.
3. In the resulting window, ensure that there are no check marks.
4. Click OK.
