Detect service pack level

I'm trying to research of a way to detect the service pack level of XP
remotely. I prefer a registry key settings so I can run a login script and
get the information. If not, anything other than WSUS since SUS will sweep
the network and I dont want to bug down our network.

Anyone who can help me is greatly appreciated. This is for the DST project.
