Isn't there, somewhere in 'System Information', some sort of detailed info
about the motherboard? ... or am I looking in the wrong place?

What type of detailed information do you need?

Start button --> RUN --> type in:

msinfo32

--> Click OK.

That gives you some.

A more "human readable" result can be returned by a software called "Belarc
Advisor":

AFAIK, you need a third-party program to get much useful information.

Aida32 Enterprise is free but a bit outdated:

It's been replaced by Everest, which is free in the Home edition but
leaves out some of the information you could get from Aida:

1) Start > Run > MSinfo32.exe.

or

2) Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information

or

3) Start > Run > DXDiag.exe.

or

4) Right-click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager.

or

5) If none of the built-in tools provide the information you want, you
can use these utilities to help determine the identities of your
computers components:

SiSoft's Sandra

Belarc Advisor
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Unlimited Possibilities' AIDA32
http://forum.aumha.org/overflow/aida32.zip

or

6) Look in the manual/documentation that came with the computer.
