Destroying my HD

I have an external Firewire HD on a Windows XP Pro SP2 laptop.

I downloaded and installed the GDI+ and another critical update and then
restarted the computer as prompted to. When the computer rebooted, it
checked the drive for errors and then when the computer came up the hard
drive is not accessable. It says it it is of filesystem type "RAW". This
used to be an NTFS partition.

This is the second time it's wiped this disk out. I'm getting a little
frustrated.

The first time it did it my drive was formatted as 1 231GB partition, but
then I split it up into a 1 115GB partion and 1 116GB partition after the
first time it wiped the drive out. Was working well until this last time it
"destroyed" it.

Help!!

Zack

RAW mean that windows can not find your file system. I would seriously
consider buying a new hard drive.
Hard drives in laptops can overheat if left on for long periods of time.
They do not have the cooling systems like larger desktop models. I would
recommend shutting down the laptop when not in use.

Dude, did you even read this message? First line states: "I have an
external Firewire HD..." If you can't help, get lost!

I was able to recover the entire contents without any corrupt files using
http://www.runtime.org software called GetDataBack for NTFS v2.31. This
program was great.

Microsoft, you may want to check to see why CHKDSK decided to take a good
working NTFS partition and after CHKDSK ran it screwed it up.
