Destroy a hibernation partition?

I'm trying to reformat an old OEM laptop disk. It currently shows:

Partition 1: Healthy (Hibernation partition)
Partition 2: E:, Healthy (Active)

If I right-click on the hibernation partition, I don't get the option delete
it.

If I try to reformat the other partition, I get a message saying "The
operation did not complete because the partition or volume is not enabled.
To enable the partition or volume, restart the computer." I restarted the
computer, but nothing changed. (This drive is mounted in an external USB
enclosure.)

Is there a way to just say "blow everything away, reformat this disk as
though it were brand new"?

All help is *much* appreciated!

Did you turn off your PC's hibernation function?

If you did, and if you are still unable to deal with this
partition, then you can use brute force:
- Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com.
- Run delpart.exe from http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm to
blow the partition away. Be careful to select the right partition to
delete!

Thanks! Do I need to boot from to Win98 if the partition I want to remove is
not on my primary drive? I'm running XP on my primary drive; I'm trying to
get a clean reformat of an external drive.

It depends on the type of your external drive. You'll
have to find out for yourself.

Hi Jesse,

Because the Hibernation partition is an OEM partition, you may
have to contact the Original Equipment Manufacturer to resolve
this issue.

As far as I know there are lots of third-party tools that can
delete a partition. You may want to have a look at Partition
Magic <http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/>

Please feel free to let us know if you have any further questions
or concerns regarding to this issue.

While PartitionMagic is a fine product, buying to delete a partition
would be equivalent to buying a touring coach for visiting the next-door
neighbours.
