Our computers at work have a dos program that we must
send & receive files with daily by modem. Our current
ISP that we've been with for years is shutting down as of
9/30, so I established a new dial up (we're in a remote
area of the county and must use dial up) with BellSouth.
After configuring the connections identical to my current
ISP connection, I got error 678 --the one that you can
hear the modem trying to get the"handshake" and it always
fails. I spoke with BellSouth (even with their modem
specialist) and they say they don't support my modem (USR
5686D RS-232 external). So, I get another connection
setup with Earthlink and I have the same problem. I went
to the USR site and downloaded the "firmware" upgrade for
my modem and installed it and now I can't even connect to
my old faithful ISP. My data processor (EDS) offers no
help & tells me that it's MY problem. Come 10/1 with no
ISP, I'm in trouble---can anyone offer any clue to a
solution????
