desop and windows explorer

HELP- i do not know why or how but on my desktop to the
left of my wallpaper is a "folder task" column that i
cannot get rid of----that was the first problem i noticed
then i discovered that i cannot open windows explorer i
lose my task bar(by the clock) icons momentarily when i
click on or try to open explorer--i have tried the
recovery console and ran several utilities to check for
problems but i still cannot find anything HELP

utility will modify the System Registry to remove Common Tasks from your
Desktop.
