desktop won't lose blue column on leftside..icons won't move

hi,
3 of my fiance's computers have a column on the left
containg folder options places & details. i thought it
was a virus from a file syn, then my daughter's computer
in boston did the same while downloading she did restore
immed. my fiance has had it for months. restore won't
work.
