Peter,
Maybe right click on desk top properties>sreensaver tab> Power tab and set
your screen from there as it may be set at 15 mins as i set mine at never.
Let me know how you go.

Peter,
Sorry disregard last msg what type of monitor CRT or LCD ?
If CRT i had the same problem it just had enough.
But if LCD i would take it back under warranty as it could be the problem.

You don't say with what frequency this happens. XP periodically refreshes
the desktop and this manifests itself as the icons briefly disappearing and
then reappearing (sometimes as the unspecified icons before it fills in the
real ones). This happens only occasionally though

If this is the refresh that is causing you trouble then open regedit and
navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Then change (or create) the registry key "NoNetCrawling" to dword:00000001.

The change can be reversed by changing "NoNetCrawling" back to
dword:00000000.

However, if it is happening immediately after the desktop appears, then it
sounds like Windows Explorer is crashing as soon as it finishes initialising
itself. I don't know how to fix this
