Something is causing the arrow on some of the shortcuts to change to ">>",
with a blue background.
XP Pro & OF2K2 with all updates.
This is a recent install with only software for scanner, Adobe reader 9, and
anti virus. I've had far more software prior to the clean install, which
this time is NTFS. The AR9 and antivirus are newer than previous install.
I've tried setting the icon cache, deleted iconcache.db for user, without
success.
I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.

Sadly I'm afraid my troubles are deeper.
Comcast recently switched from McAfee to Norton and strongly suspect Norton
is the culprit in some way.
Since I had posted this I was getting a common error message when the system
would attempt to scan the disk upon startup. Not finding exact resolution
via Google, I've been trying to restore as far back as possible. The most
recent entry I would like to work says Norton 360 removed some entries from
the registry.
Trying to boot normally, within a few seconds of being booted, I would
either get a screen of total video corruption and lockup, or it would just
go to a black screen and the HDD light would stay on for a very long time.
I've disabled everything non_MS under services via msconfig and nearly
everything under startup. So I've booted to normal and think I need a new
plan of attack.
HELP, please.

Does Comcast *force* you to use Norton (or McAfee) or just make it
available for free? If the latter, I suggest that you uninstall it and
install a more friendly antivirus application. I'm not sure what the
latest thinking around here is with respect to free a/v apps (AVG or
Avast, probably), but if you're willing to pay a little, I suggest NOD32
from http://www.eset.com/products/nod32.php

Because you so recently reinstalled Windows, it may be simpler -- and
you will be certain that there is no trace of it left -- if you
reinstall Windows. From your post, it sounds as if you may have to
reinstall Windows anyway: "Norton 360 removed some entries from the
registry."

If you don't want to re-install Windows, Symantec makes several tools to
uninstall their Norton products. Google for the one applicable to the
particular product you have. Make sure the article(s) you use
correspond(s) to the *year* as well as the name of your product. But
because you don't know *which* entries Norton removed from your
registry, merely uninstalling Norton may not solve your problem.

It was Norton. Part of the suite is backup which I had turned off. There was
a sub setting that probably should have defaulted to off at the same time
that continues to mark files for backup and that changed the icon shortcut
arrow.
