desktop settings not saved

Hi,

I'm new to windows XP Pro.
Can't manage it to save and restore my desktop settings after restart.
Instead there is an emty desktop where I left file explorer open :-(
Earlier windows versions always restored Windows explorer on the desktop or
even multiple instances of it.
Can anyone give an hint what's wrong?
