i believe that i figured out the problem myself. after uninstalling and
reinstalling desktop search, i noticed that the "little tool bar" that i
referred to was the same as the bottom of the "as you type" pop up pane. i
am guessing that something screwed up the the pane, pushing the "toolbar"
to the top. perhaps, if i had pulled the tool bar down, the pane would have
reappeared.
