revert the XP desktop back to what I had in ME. I was told I could d

Do you mean the interface style, or the actual
presentation (background image, icon layout, etc). Do
change to a traditional windows interface:
- Right click the start button - go to properties.
- Choose 'Classic Start Menu' from the 'start menu' tab.

If you want all your personalisations, then you needed to
do an upgrade, not a full install - i suspect it's too
late for you to recover you're old settings now...
