Desktop refresh every time I close folders

Hello all,

it is now few weeks that my XP has developed a very
annoying habit: every time I close Windows Explorer or a
desktop folder (i.e.: a folder I have created to group
program icons), the desktop refresh itself.
It takes several seconds to do so and for few moments the
only thing on the screen is the background picture. All
the desktop icons and the tool bar vanish and they
reappear after few seconds.
Even the task bar disappears and the icons on it come
back one at time, just like they do at boot.
It does NOT do that when I close a program, only with
folders and Windows Explorer.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? It is not a death or
life situation, but it is very unnerving.

Thanks, Paolo.
