I installed sp3 on my professional xp computer. Now, I can't connect to ie
using the desktop ie icon. The ie screen comes up and then immediately
closes down. However, if I click on shortcuts that I have saved from ie to
my desktop, I can connect to ie and the ie screen stays open.

What happen if you clicked Start Run then type in the box:
iexplore.exe click [Ok] does it open a connect?
If it does then your Icon is corrupted and you need to remove and create a
new one by doing the following:
Click Start >> All Programs Right click Internet Explorer and select Sopy
then Paste on your Deskop.
