hi all,
I have windows 2000 advanced server which just recently when i started and
logged on had the nothing on desktop except webshots wallpaper. To get back
the desktop icons, startmenu and taskbar i have to open task manager by
pressing ctrl+alt+delete and browse to c:\winnt\explorer file to get back
everything to normal.

Is the explorer file corrupt or not loading at startup.

I have to do this everytime i startup. How do i permanently fix the problem.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------
By the way i thought that i could start explorer by just typing explorer in
'create new task' dailog box instead of browsing c:\winnt\explorer or am i
wrong.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------
thanks for the help

-rajiv

Control Panel|System|Advanced|Environment Variables|System Variables and
make sure that "Path" has
%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%
at least somewhere in the string.

Also check that "Path" found at
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment
is a type Reg_Expand_Sz string and not type Reg_Sz

Check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at the Reg_Sz
string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

The profile may also be corrupt or these may help you.

Hi dave,
thanks a lot for the advice(which was really quick). I checked out all the
possible error causes including the 'path' and 'registry settings'.
But they were all as they should have been.

The first link Article ID:256194 suggested renaming Shdocvw.dll file in the
%SystemRoot% to Shdocvw.old but when i checked this file was in
c:\winnt\system32 folder. Should i still try renaming it.

Also can i copy explorer.exe file from another computer and just replace the
one existing on my compter.

Will using ERD to repair windows be of any help.

Since you have to navigate to the %systemroot% folder to start explorer.exe
it still seems you have a path problem. Once the desktop is loaded then try;
Start|Run|cmd
to see what happens. Also from a command prompt;
set
and check that 'SystemRoot' and 'Path' resolve correctly
