I run win xp pro on a Dell 9400 laptop wit an external monitor attached. For
the most part I use both screens. When I disconnect the laptop and use it
without the external monitor my desktop icons become disgorganized and all
migrate to the left side of the screen. Is there a way to freeze the icons
so no matter what configuration I use the laptop in the icons remain in the
same place organized in the same way? thanks

How do I remove icons on display in the bottom toolbar? I click and exit them
but they return. I only want to keep a couple of icons there.

You need to look within the preferences of the individual programs to
see if you can remove them from the Notification area. So right-click
one click Preferences or Options, if available, and set it to not show
in Tray/Notification area. Or set each to not run on Startup..

Items can be moved, but they are moved back after reboot.

If Auto Arrange is checked...
The icons are arranged in columns along the left side of your screen.
