Why, why, why do my desktop icons seldom stay where I want them? A more
important question....is there a way to lock those suckers in place that
doesn't require my having a Phd in Computer Science?

Right click desktop, click arrange icons by, then click lock to grid (and if
you also want them sorted in some way, select the option you want).

I meant align to grid, but that does lock them

Try either Save Settings on Exit and/or Lock Desktop items....

1. Line 54 (right hand side)
2. Line 188 (right hand side)

Although this does not solve your exact problem, it does provide a
convenient workaround. Download and install Icon Restore from

http://download.cnet.com/Icon-Restor...-10163499.html

It provides the ability to save your icon layout and to restore it at a
couple of click of your mouse.

Get used to it or find a 3rd party app. It used to drive me mad that my icons
would randomly shuffle every boot/resume/crash/unlock/whenever, but I stopped
caring after using Vista for 6 months (You think its bad in XP :V), now I
just keep what junk I'm using most often on the desktop (shortcuts to
folders) and everything else in the Quick Launch.

Thanks for your input. Do see Kelly's reply above. Her/His(?) reference to
Line 188 in the indicted link is a good fix. ( I had tried "Icon Restorer"
and it really didn't work very well, at least on my system)
