Desktop Icons Changed to Generic Icons

I am running Windows XP Pro (SP2). Recently some of my desktop icons changed
from their proper form to a generic type of icon. I can go to Explorer and
put them back to their proper form, but why would they all of a sudden start
doing that? It doesn't happen to all the icons, just some (MSN Messenger,
MSN Zone and Norton System Works 2003 are the worst).
Any ideas on why this happens, and how I might prevent it?
Thanks. Bill.
