I had to re-install XP and now the shortcut icon for IE is gone. I have
looked through these newsgroups but can't find the solution. Any help is
greatly appreciated.

Right-mouse click on the desktop and choose properties
Then choose Desktop
Then click on the "customize desktop"
There you will find the option to show the IE icon on the desktop.

Control Panel-Display Properties-Desktop tab.
Customize Desktop
