Desktop graphics glitch

At some random stage after using Internet Explorer 6 (in XP Pro) I will get
the whole desktop (which IE6 is maximised on at that time) changing to some
very low resolution. It looks like 640x480, from being 1280x1024.
Everything is displayed wrapped around and sort of ghostly looking.
If I close IE6 the desktop flips back to normal.
If I had 2 or more IE6 windows open I need to close them all before it flips
back to normal. Even a download window remaining open will keep it in the
glitched resolution.
But as soon as all IE6 based things are closed everything is back to normal.
And you can restart using IE6 stuff fine again. Til the next time it occurs.

It is very random, though if I use IE6 a lot in a day it is very likely to
happen at least once or twice in that day.

I have replaced the nVidia drivers with a dozen different versions over
time, and all do the same. So it is not their fault. IE6 is throwing the
wobbly into the system.
I have not been able to pinpoint an exact action I do in IE6 when it
triggers. It can happen after everything was perfectly fine and then you go
to scroll down. Maybe it is related to a change in graphics incident (scroll
down, redraw etc).

You could try opening a command window and typing DXDIAG [return] which will
run the directx diagnostics... it could be something defective that is not
due to the drivers. What video card is it? I know NVIDIA chips are used but
who actually makes the card?

I found that my Asus card (admittedly a pretty old Geforce II with only 32
MB ram) was pretty odd with Asus drivers... and an update usually fixed one
thing but broke something else. Currently using NVIDIA drivers and some
stuff works fine with XP but not W2003 (Dual boot so hardware identical).
