I always save programs to the desktop - but suddenly they won't save because
the desktop has been set to Read Only. i set it back but it doesn't
stick.I've found the Read Only setting is applied right up to Documents and
Settings. What can be done to reset it back to its proper setting?

Please note that any Read Only setting set on any "folder" is general
"ignored" by XP. This has always been the fact that the Read Only
"setting" is only "processed" on the individual files. If the Desktop
is set to read-only, you will need to:

1) Check the PC to see if any "malware" or virus is "controlling" the
PC. Clear out any found.

2) Check your XP user account and make sure it is not set to a
"limited" user. It seems that "limited" users can not "save" setting
changes.

3) Check any / all security software. Some may protect the Desktop
settings.
