I have a client who uses a Windows 2000 on a laptop and
the welcome screen appears, but after that and the
desktop loads the desktop with a black screen appears.
However, the alt+f4 shuts it down but it's invisible or
something. It works fine in safe mode, or in VGA mode.
Ran scandisk and defragementer with no errors.

Sounds to me like the client screwed up the resolution. I would uninstall
the video drivers and reinstall them. May not be the best solution but it
should work.

Maybe explorer.exe fails to load. What happens when
you do this:

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc
- Click "Applications" tab
- Click "New Task"
- Type "Explorer.exe" (without the quotes) and click OK
