Desktop files using Wordpad - drive or connection unavailable

Windows XP Media Center. I recently had a system recovery. I backed up
files and transferred them to my computer after the system recovery. Now I
cannot open any files that were on my desktop if they were created using
Wordpad. I get the message that "the drive or connection that the shortcut
refers to is unavailable". The "target" and "start in" options point only
to the desktop and then the file name and no program is listed.

Have I lost the file forever? Where is the file stored when you use Wordpad
and then save it to the desktop? If it is still available, where would I
find it?

Thanks for any help.

You possibly copied the shortcut (.lnk file) rather than the actual file
referenced by the shortcut. Unless you also copied the actual documents
from the "My Documents" folder, or wherever they resided, they're lost.
If you created new files, navigated with "Save As" to the Desktop and
saved there, the files should have been copied and should now work.

I do use the "save as" feature when I make a Wordpad file and save it to the
desktop. So you are saying they should be accessible. Yet, I get the error
message. I will keep trying but I don't know what else to try except keep
looking in other file folders. Thanks anyway.
