well, i've got this a bit anoying problem where i have a background color for
my desctop icon names. it is basically as if the names are highlighted. i
want there to be no highlight at all. i tried playing with -Display
Properties->Appearance->Advanced. No luck. All it does only changes the
color. I want it to be clear. Please dont tell me i am stupid. Thanks and
have a good day.

1- Right click Desktop select Properties and on the Display properties click
on
Desktop Tab then click Customize Desktop.
On the Desktop Items click on Web Tab and be sure all boxes unchecked there.
Then click on Appearance Tab then Effects button. On the Effects window be
sure the settings been set to suite your requirements.
On the Effect Windows select these boxes:

[ √ ] Use the following transition effect for menus and Tooltips:

[ Fade effect ][v]

[ √ ] Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:
[ Standard ][v]

[ ] Use Large Icons
[ √ ] Show shadows under menus
[ √ ] Show window contents while dragging
[ √ ] Hide underlined letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt
Key

Or Try this:

* Right click a Blank space on your desktop
- Select Arrange Icons By from the list.
- Uncheck the "Lock web Items on Desktop" option

* Another Right click My Computer and select properties.
- Click on Advanced tab
- on Advanced tab click Performance Button
- On Performance Window click Visual Effects Tab.
- Verify the option is Unchecked:
[ ] Use drop shadows for icons labels On the desktop.

Click Ok to close and Hit F5 to refresh.

Open the System applet in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and
click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the "Use drop shadows
for icon labels on the desktop option", and click Ok.

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>VisualEffects - check
"use drop shadows for icon labels".
2) Right-click on Desktop ->Arrange Icons by>Lock Web items must be cleared.
3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't work.
To check for web content: Display Properties>Desktop>Customize
Desktop>Web - make sure all checkboxes are clear.
4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.
